HD is dead! Toshiba to stop production

The war is over and Blu-Ray is the winner. So, what to get? From my research the best bet is the PlayStation 3. One of the nice things about HD was ALL features of the player were included with each player. This is not the case with Blu-Ray. The PS3 is complete. Should there need to be an update, the PS3 is web enabled and updating is a breeze.

Best of all, the 40 gig unit is 399.00 and I bought one at Target for 399 and got a 40.00 gift card. If you need backward compatibly with PS2 games, you will need the 80 gig PS3

The PS3 I purchased came with Spiderman3 ( in Blu-Ray). What a great picture! Well worth the money!!!!

Virus removal Minnetonka or Minneapolis St. Paul

If your computer is running slowly or is none responsive, you may have a virus / spyware. Once on your machine, someone could control your computer remotely. Worse yet, they can log all your keystrokes ( including passwords for online banking, email, credit card numbers, etc). If you have a virus or spyware, it can be very difficult to remove . The best practice is NOT to open attachments or click links in emails. Don't click the "continue" button on the popup that says: "You system is infected with a virus, to remove it click below" This is just an advertisement and will load you up with junkware and viruses.
If you think you may have a virus or need an experienced professional to help with computer issues, call The Softies, Inc. http://www.softies.com/ Phone: 763-537-0365

Microsoft Steady State for XP. Lock down your PC

This is a great, somewhat new, download from Microsoft. Steady State is a free download from Microsoft that is targeted for public access computers or even PC's around the house. Once installed, a "steady state" computer will continue to be just that..in the same state after each reboot.

The "system" hard drive will always be returned to its configured state after a user is through using the computer. This is a great way to also protect against viruses and spyware because if the system gets infected during a session, all changes will be erased before the next session starts.

This could also work great for the classroom! It is like reimaging a drive after every use.

You can watch a video and download the software here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/sharedaccess/default.mspx

Additionally, because the "system" drive is the only locked down drive, you could actually have a data drive where users could save their data. EG..you could have Word as an application on the system and data stored on drive "D". Each time the system was rebooted Word would behave exactly as configured yet have access to new documents.....

This is a blurb from the Microsoft site:

Depending on the purpose and requirements of your shared computers, different features and configuration options of Windows SteadyState prove particularly valuable. Click the scenario below that most closely matches your situation.
In the classroom
Classrooms and computer labs can offer groups of users a consistent and reliable computer learning environment more efficiently, while increasing the productivity of the teaching staff.
In an Internet café
Internet cafés, kiosks, and other businesses offering commercial access to shared computers can help increase customer satisfaction while reducing computer down time, administrative costs, and total cost of ownership.
At the library
Libraries and community technology centers can help protect computers against tampering cost effectively. They can customize shared user profiles to meet the needs of different patrons.
At home
Parents can use Windows SteadyState on a household computer to let their children share it without causing harm or accessing inappropriate sites on the Internet.
Other uses for Windows SteadyState
Anyone whose work involves repeatedly installing and uninstalling programs on a computer can make good use of Windows SteadyState. Software testers are a good example. If disk protection is on when they install a new program, any problems the program causes won't become permanent. Even a complete uninstall of a faulty program is only a reboot away.

Reply to Craigslist RSS feeds automatically with new Scripting bot from The Softies Inc.

I just tried a beta release of a tool from The Softies, Inc. that will allow the user to automatically reply to RSS feeds. I used it to reply to help wanted posts on Craigslist. The software is still in beta but should be released shortly.

The user selects the RSS feed, input the text to include in the reply email, set a reply speed timer, and off it goes.

It parses each posting in the RSS feed for the reply address, saves the address in a database ( to avoid duplicate responses), then sends off your email response.

The software worked flawlessly but the interface needs to be streamlined and a few more features could be implemented like additional keyword search filters, include files, and the ability to include things besides text in the reply.

Blog Issue in Google organic listings

I have found an interesting result with the google search engine. I have been adding content to the TTR Tech Tips Radio for a couple of weeks now. After day 2 I could actually find my blog through the google search. I posted an article about a Dryer emergency my daughter created. I thought wow that was fast!

I purchased a domain name through Godaddy.com ( techtipsradio.com). I made a DNS change so "blog.techtipsradio.com" would point to the blog. I made the advanced change to my blog to allow my new domain name to point here. The old name was techtipsradio.blogspot.com. Blogger even told me that the link, techtipsradio.blogspot.com, would not be lost.

The very next day the dryer article was COMPLETLY gone!!!

I have added the domain to the google crawler, but that will take some time. I guess the lesson learned here is: Keep the blogspot name until your domain name is being searched.

I did a small test by coping the dryer article to my other blog gobuckoff.blogspot.com I will monitor how long it takes to make the search visable.

Podcasting the next step #5. Teleprompting

After a few tests, it is becoming apparent that adlib is tough. Back to the search engine and look for a free Teleprompter. I found a free "online" teleprompter at:

http://www.freeprompter.com/

Just type up what you plan to talk about, and then paste it into the online teleprompter. This should do for now but I will keep looking.

Podcasting the next step #4 Creating the intro

I will post others as I stumble across them...

Podcasting the next step #2 Tools and Microphone

My next step in setting up for podcasting was/ is searching for some free tools. I want to be able to capture sound / voice. I need a microphone. I looked at the Blue Snowball USB and others then remembered that I have a USB microphone that came with Rockband. ( Xbox360). It plugged in and worked with no other issues.

Next I wanted some Free software to edit and mix the sound. Many sites recommended "Audacity" available at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/. I downloaded it and so far looks good.

Another helpful site on podcasting is located at http://www.poducateme.com/
